Good Afternoon Families!
"Today in Sibbald U I was in photography and we took pictures outside. We used digital cameras." Ashlyn "In Sibbald U I made a caterpillar puppet and we also got to do the food from the very hungry caterpillar." Henry "We are starting Book Creator next week and we learned about penguins and now we know a lot about them now. We will put that into book creator." Ben "This week we were working on balancing and moves and poses on the gymnastics ropes and beams." Isla "We are working on some new gymnastic moves. We need to be safe when we are in gymnastics." Jayden "In Social Studies we are learing about community and we are learning about what a community is and now we are learning about how to map things." Lily "This week in Sibbald U I made a flip book in doodling." Meyer "This week in music we are trying to figure out how to play doggy doggy where is your bone. We are also learning how to play the xylophone." Lucy "We are learning about mapping and we mapped our bedrooms from if we were looking up high. I drew my bedroom and it looked exactly like my real bedroom." Eleanor "We mixed colours in art and red and blue makes purple. Blue and yellow makes green. Red and yellow makes orange." Maggie and Avery "In math we are learing about one more and two more. One plus one equals two and two plus one equals three." Jessica "In math we have been playing math games. We played doubles bingo." It has been another busy week in our grade one and two classrooms! Take a look below and read what your children have said! "This week in gym we were learning different ways to move in gymnastics. We also did balances. We got to show our routines to our class" Avery 'This week in our visual journals we got to do a stop and jot about our community. My community is my dance." Emma P "In Sibbald U today we took photos on iPads. We worked on editing. It was really fun! Jayden We did math. We have been practicing doubles plus one. We got to practice our facts playing a game" Emma C Today in Sibbald U Games Galore we got to play with balloons. We had to tie balloons to our legs with string and people tried to stomp on them. I broke some ballons!' Ren "In Sibbald U we also play with the balloons and tried to keep them from touching the ground' Audry "In Sibbald U I was doing finding fairies. I made my magic wand for my fairy.' Dora "For the month of February we have been watching videos and reading books about Penguins. Soon we are going to make books on the iPad with what we've learned. On our our storyboards we started by writing a title and a question." Jessica "This week we did math with cards. You had to flip one card and then the other person flipped another card. Then you had to add them together. If you got the right answer you got to keep the pair." Carson "This week we did a free write. I wrote about skating with my friend at the lake." Lucy "On our storyboard we have started writing about Penguin Body, next was food and habitat. If you finished you could add more pages on the back. "In music we played Lucy Locket and it was really fun because whenever we clapped loud the seeker knew where the locket was." Lucy "This week we had crazy hair day and in our visual journals we drew our crazy hair. My hair was turquoise and purple with loops." Evelyn "This week we did circle art and I did the olympic symbol and a Canadian flag." Luke "We went to the gym and talked with some olympians. They talked to us about creating a goal and saying how you will get there in three steps!" Danny and Isla "We wrote about our goals and how we are going to get there. My goal is to be a singer and having courage will help me get closer to my goal." Addy "This week at school we did echo reading. It is where someone says the words and someone else says it after them." Joshua "We made the life cycle of a penguin. First the penguins have to find a mate." Jett and Lucy "We wrote about who our hero is and I wrote about my Dad because he works to keep our house and so that we can buy stuff that we need." Dylan "We have been learning about doubles and near doubles. Near doubles are like a double, but it is not a double. It is the number beside it (6+7=13)." Eleanor "In math we have been learning about doubles plus one/near doubles. We used people in the classroom to help us with this." Tom "We wrote the doubles and doubles plus one in our math journals." Gabby "This week at school we found a partner and some dice and we rolled them and saw if it was a near double or a double." We had a short, but wonderful week in grade 1/2! Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who was able to join us for skating!! We can't express how much we appreciate your support for making the last three days a huge success!! We hope that everyone has stayed safe and warm during our snow storm this week! Here are some highlights of our week together: -"Yesterday we did a directed drawing of a snowman, because it was a cold and snowy day. I liked colouring it in". Emma P. -"This week we did a directed drawing of a Penguin. We coloured it with black and orange pencil crayons". Danny "We also did a snowy house directed drawing". Asher -"Yesterday we did a directed drawing of a Fox. We coloured it in with brown and red". Lily -"This week we got to go snowshoeing, in the field. It was fun because the snow was so deep". Kennedy. -"This week we went into our Penguin books. We learned a little bit more about types of Penguins". Lucy -"In math, we were working on doubles, and the Grade 2's had to see how high they could get making doubles". Addy -"This week at school we looked a the food that Penguins eat, every Penguin eats fish and squid. The Emperor Penguins eat something that is called Krill, it look like tiny fish". Emily -Yesterday we did math, we listened to the Napping House. We had to see how many feet were in our family and I have 14 feet in my family". Dylan -"Yesterday, in math we did doubles and we also did baseball math too". Sebastien. Important Dates: -Skating is next week we will be leaving the school at 8:30 am and returning by 11:00 am Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. -Please returned ALL skating forms by Monday morning or students will not be able to join us. Students also NEED a skating helmet. -If families have any extra helmets or skates that they would not mind sharing, please bring them in labelled. -Teacher Convention (No school Thursday and Friday). -Family Day is Monday February 18th. -We will re-schedule some snowshoeing days during the month of February. It might have been chilly outside but we have been busy in Grade 1/2. We have continued to work on our penguin investigation and writing, we started to look at addition strategies in math, and learned about ground hog day! Read below to see some of the things that the students of grade 1/2 had to say about their learning! This week at school we started our penguin story board, We are going to use this to plan our penguin book on book creator. Emily VK In gym we are doing floor hockey. We are playing a team again another team. I was a goalie. We have been working on dribbling and shooting. Sometimes we call that stick handling. Audry Yesterday we wrote about ground hog day. In winter the ground hog hibernates and then comes out to see its shadow for spring. Joshua H. This week we started our first Sibbald U class. I am in finding fairies. We made our blue print for our terrarium. Evelyn This week at school we have been practicing adding. We have been using the white boards to practice doubles. I showed 1 plus 1 is 2 and 2 plus 2 is 4. Eleanor This week at school we in math we made trains. We made them to figure out math equations. Each train was made of two different colors. The colors were different numbers in a number sentence. You can take away or add blocks to your train. Maelle. Reminders We will be going snowshoeing Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday next week from 12:30-2:30. We will need parents to help us to put on and take off the snowshoes. Please let you child's teacher know if you are able to volunteer. We will be going skating on Feb 12, 13, 14 at the Lake Boavista community center. We will need 5 volunteer for each class to walk and help put on skates. Please let your child's teacher know if you are able to volunteer. As well we will need skates for some students. If you have extra skates at home you are willing to lend for this session please let us know. Or if you need skates please inform us and we will get you a pair to borrow for this activity. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for Parent Teacher Conferences. It was wonderful to see you and share about your child. Our skating field trip to the Lake Bonavista Rec. Centre is coming up! We will be skating on Monday February 12th, Tuesday February 13th, and Wednesday February 14th. Forms will be sent home soon. If you do not have skates and a skating helmet please let your child's teacher know so that we can help you find some! We have some pairs that were donated to our school last year that may be the right fit. Sibbald U courses went home yesterday with your child. Students are excited to start on Friday February 2nd! Below are some highlights of our week! "We learned about growing/increasing patterns in math." Ashlyn "This week we drew eyes noses and mouths for our self portraits." Carter and Clive "We drew our heads and coming out of our head was all of the stuff that we like. I drew a paintbrush because I like art." Jett "We brought in penguin books, toys, clay penguins and felt penguins for our penguin table." isla "We did a math problem. We noticed that their is a pattern to solve the problem." Addy "This week in music we did the tortoise and the kangaroo. We get to watch it and sometimes we get to dance to it." Lucy "We are learning about penguin. We watched a movie called Snow Babies. We did a stop and jot where we stopped the video and then you write something." Charlotte "We learned ab lot about patterns. In TWAS we did three patterns and Mom and Dad at home are going to extend the patterns." Eleanor "Penguin feathers have oil that help them swim. The feathers are waterproof and if they weren't they would get cold." Lilah "The colour of penguins is important because then they can blend into the top pf the water and the bottom of the water." Evelyn "This week we started skipping club with Ms. Chen and we got to make sure the skipping rope was the right size for us." Emily VK "Ms. Manser is reading a book to us and it is called The One and Only Ivan. The main character is Ivan and he is a gorilla." Danny "In gym we started floor hockey. We started passing with a partner. One of us had to stand on one of the white lines and the other partner on the other." Jayden KT Our penguin artifact tables are growing!
